Why we love the GMT-Master
Everyone knows Rolex. Your grandma knows Rolex. Chances are, there’s one in your family already. My nephew got his the day he was born. He hadn’t even opened his eyes — but was already wearing a better watch than me.
That’s the thing about Rolex: it’s more than a watch. It’s a marker of time, yes — but also of meaning. It’s an investment. A symbol. Something that grows in value and significance with every year that passes.
In fact, most GMT-Master models are now reselling for more than their original price — some vintage pieces even hitting six figures at auction. That’s not hype. That’s heritage.
From day one, we knew Rolex had to be part of our prize lineup. Not because of the logo — but because of what it stands for: Legacy. Investment. Quiet honour.
Over the decades, Rolex has released dozens of models — some wildly recognisable, others more subtle. But all of them helped define what a proper timepiece should look like. When it came to choosing our first, we landed on the GMT-Master.
Initially, I was looking for something more unisex. But the deeper I went, the more I noticed how many iconic women wore the GMT. It’s bold — but never brash. Understated, but unmistakable. In the end, it felt like the perfect place to begin.
Here’s what surprised me most: The GMT wasn’t made for the red carpet. It was made for pilots. Back in the 1950s, the airline Pan Am — the gold standard of global travel at the time — asked Rolex to design a watch for their flight crews. They needed something that could track multiple time zones (this was long before smartphones), and Rolex delivered: a rugged, handsome, two-tone-bezel tool watch that pilots could rely on. And the rest is history.
Some of the most famous GMTs are nicknamed after their colourways — like the red-and-blue “Pepsi”, or the black-and-blue “Batman.” These names aren’t just playful. They serve a purpose: to quickly distinguish day from night across time zones. Smart, simple, iconic.
The GMT-Master carries a story — one of utility, adventure, precision, and timeless style. It’s a piece of design with real meaning. We love everything it represents.
